England along with Welsh Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the groups conclude according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
