19 of Medvedev's 21 championships have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback Medvedev claimed his maiden championship for 882 days with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The athlete, a ex- number one, has had a torrid period, managing just a single victory at the major tournaments and experiencing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

His varied form on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in particular - resulted in him falling of the top ten and eventually separating with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.

Currently working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has gradually improved in the past month - culminating in a tightly fought three-set win over opponent Moutet.

This represents the player's maiden title since the Rome competition and initial on a hard surface after that period of the previous year.

Victory also signifies Medvedev has achieved twenty-one championships at twenty-one distinct competitions.

"It's the first time I have attended a competition with my two daughters at once, so to get a championship is especially meaningful," commented ranked player the champion.

"This championship is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the maiden victory I won when my first daughter her name was born was for her."

The athlete, the past champion, had been defeated in his previous six finals, featuring in Halle earlier this year.

His retrieving play style and recurring outbursts on the playing surface had prompted observers to wonder if his ability to perform at the elite level was concluded.

But the 29-year-old has altered his approach in recent weeks, striving to approach the net and play positively, reinforced by an enhanced service.

The champion fought back from a break down in the opening set against the difficult Moutet, securing 4 of the concluding five points to go ahead.

Both players swapped service breaks in the following set before the challenger, attempting for his first ATP Tour championship, seized the initiative to force a final set.

The opponent defended 4 early opportunities in a close final set before the Russian won the break to 15 to secure the win.

Fittingly, he earned victory with a rally at the net area, with Moutet unable to handle a shot after over two and a half hours.
