The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
