The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
