Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
